How to make your communities voice heard

We currently run two regular online health consumer representative courses (the beginner course is free) and one on-demand face-to-face workshop.

Our courses provide education, support and networking opportunities for new and experienced health consumers engaged in advocacy and representative roles within health services or those who are looking to be involved in consumer representation.

CR101: Introduction to Consumer Representation

A short, free online consumer representative course that explores the basic concepts of consumer representation which can be done in one sitting.

Who is this course for?

It is perfect as an introduction to health consumer representation for new health consumer reps.

How does it work?

Register by filling in the form via the Register button below.  We will process your registration and enrol you to our CR101 Introduction to Consumer Representation Online Training Course.  You can then start your course at any time that suits you.

The approximate time commitment to finish the course: Between 30 minutes and 2 hours to complete.

What do I need?

Participants need access to a computer/device with a reliable internet connection, functioning webcam and speakers. Participants can choose to print out extra course and study materials themselves or, where this is not possible, we can send hardcopy materials via post.

CR201: Exploring Consumer Representation

An in-depth, online consumer representative training course that provides education, support, and networking opportunities for all health consumer representatives.

Who is this course for?

It is for health consumer representatives engaged with NSW Local Health Districts, Primary Health Networks, public or private hospitals and health-related NGOs.

It is also convenient for health consumer representatives who cannot attend our face-to-face classes due to travel distance or health-related issues.

How does it work?

Participants have 6 months of online access to our learning platform. During that time, they complete five online modules. These involve some reading, activities online, and participating in online chat forums. Participants also have the option to join a monthly catch-up session live on Zoom.

The approximate time commitment to finish the course: 8-12 hours.

CR201: Exploring Consumer Representation

CR202: Comprehensive Consumer Representative Training, face-to-face

Our face-to-face consumer representative training teaches the same content as CR201 with the added benefits of networking and face-to-face discussions.

This course covers topics such as:

  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of health consumer representatives, health service providers and the interactions between these groups
  • Context of the health system in NSW and the Primary Health Networks
  • How consumer representatives help improve health services
  • Using personal lived experience and stories in advocacy
  • Understanding the importance of self-care
  • The impact of values, beliefs and attitudes on communication
  • Tips and tools for effective participation in meetings

Who is this course for?

We currently only bring our face-to-face training course to you! If you are an organisation and have a group of consumer representatives to be trained, contact us. If you are interested in attending a face-to-face training, please email elearning@hcnsw.org.au.

How does it work?

Our training comes as a standard package, and our trainers will tailor the content depending on the group’s learning needs.

If you require specific customisation, there will be an additional fee for service, which we are happy to discuss with you.

Travel and accommodation expenses will be added to your invoice for training outside of the Greater Sydney area.
