Strengthening Consumer Involvement in Health Research across Sydney Health Partners

Working together to make health consumers in research a reality

Project Overview

In 2020, Sydney Health Partners (SHP) partnered with Health Consumers NSW (HCNSW), to undertake two initial projects – an environmental scan of current consumer involvement activity within health research across SHP, and the development and delivery of an introductory training module for consumers, clinicians and researchers.

Key project messages

The projects attracted a high level of interest, with over 160 consumers, researchers and clinicians providing input into the environmental scan, and 63 people attending three initial training sessions.

The environmental scan highlighted excellent examples of consumer involvement in health research, largely driven by individual champions.

Evaluation of the training by participants was very positive and showed that the learning objectives were met.

Project Outcomes

In March 2021, SHP and HCNSW produced a summary report with eight key recommendations that include:

  • the development of a Consumer and Community Involvement Framework and principles for health and medical research in SHP;
  • Providing further introductory training and the development of additional modular training for researchers and consumers;
  • The development of a suite of practical resources for researchers and consumers including a Remuneration and Reimbursement guide for consumers involved in research;
  • Showcasing existing examples of good practice in consumer and community involvement across Sydney Health Partners;
  • Explore opportunities to include consumer involvement in health research in undergraduate and higher degree research education; and
  • Identify local consumer involvement champions and develop a buddying and mentoring program for consumers and researchers.

What next?

In September 2021, Sydney Health Partners and Health Consumers NSW commenced a Stage 2 project which builds on the recommendations of the Stage 1 project.

In 2022 and 2023 HCNSW has worked with SHP to develop an ecosystem that supports consumer and community involvement across health and medical research. This includes the development of a Consumer and Community Involvement Framework and principles for health and medical research across SHP.
