Throughout the year, we run projects and campaigns about different topics – some working with our partners, some by ourselves. All of them revolve around issues important to – and for – health consumers and their representatives and health organisations in NSW.

Ageism

This project has its genesis in anecdotal evidence from the many members of HCNSW and the Older Women Network NSW, about instances of ageism they experienced in their dealings with the health care sector.

Better Care, Better Outcomes

HCNSW and the Physical Disability Council of NSW (PDCN) ran a joint, one-month online consumer survey to try to understand peoples’ experience of communication difficulties in NSW hospitals.

Consumer Voices in Clinical Trials (ConVICTioN)

A group of NSW health consumers were brought together with the aim of developing consumer co-designed resources to help increase awareness and participation in clinical trials in NSW.

Intersections

Have you ever felt marginalised, excluded, mistreated, or belittled when receiving healthcare? We talked to people with intersectional needs who received – or tried to receive – healthcare.

Renowned broadcaster and throat cancer survivor Julie McCrossin presents our four-part podcast and video series promoting how patients and their families can use the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights to make their voices heard.

Strengthening Consumer Involvement in Health Research

With Sydney Health Partners, we undertook two projects – an environmental scan of current consumer involvement activity within health research across SHP, and the development and delivery of an introductory training module for consumers, clinicians and researchers.

Trust and Transparency

We partnered with the Evidence, Policy & Influence Collaborative at the Charles Perkins Centre, The University of Sydney and Consumer Health Forum of Australia to host a workshop to discuss the risks and benefits of partnering with the pharmaceutical industry.

Visiting Guide

The Visiting Guide outlines the findings of HCNSW’s Consumer Leaders Taskforce investigation into the impacts of changed visiting policies during the Covid-19 lockdowns and outlines the principles to address these.
