Experiences of people with disabilities in the NSW Health System
On 26th February, Health Consumers NSW CEO Anthony Brown met with NSW Health Minister Ryan Park MP. We were part of a team led by Physical Disability Council of NSW CEO Ed Morris, Intellectual Disability Rights Service (IDRS) CEO Joanne Yates, and Stroke Recovery Association NSW CEO Michelle Sharkey to discuss heartbreaking experiences of people with disabilities in the NSW Health System, and the need for a NSW Disability Health Strategy.
The last NSW Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) elapsed over five years ago and stories we have heard from people with disabilities indicate that the inspirational principles outlined are not being felt on the frontline. Consultation for the new anticipated DIAP has not been wide enough, with most of our NSW disability and health consumer advocacy colleagues not being involved.
There is a clear correlation between quality consultation and quality service experience. NSW Health has had tremendous success with developing the NSW LGBTIQ+ Health Strategy, consulting with over 1600 stakeholders through the process. This deep listening is the guiding standard needed to enhance health outcomes for our community and should define targeted priorities for change.
We are grateful for Minister Park’s time and commitment to developing a practical NSW Disability Health Strategy. We look forward to working with Minister Park and NSW Health to empower the voices of people living with disabilities through consultation, enhancing health outcomes for our community.
